Grass fire spreads to neighborhood, torches homes in Dallas County, Texas

Grass fire has destroyed several homes in Balch Springs, Texas as the Lone Star State sees triple-digit temperatures on Monday. 

BALCH SPRINGS, Texas – More than two dozen homes were damaged or destroyed after a grass fire spread to a neighborhood on Monday afternoon in North Texas.

Firefighters responded to a grass fire in Balch Springs, located southeast of Dallas, near I-20. Gusty winds quickly spread the fire into the neighborhood.

In all, 26 homes were damaged and nine were destroyed, FOX 4 Dallas said.

Evacuations were ordered within the neighborhood until crews could contain the fire. 

The fire was said to have started when someone mowing the grass hit a metal object, creating a spark. 

There is no word on any injuries at this time. 

FOX 4 Dallas' helicopter flew over the homes of the fire in Balch Springs, Texas, Monday afternoon. 

Heat and the lack of rain have continued to fuel fires across Texas.
